I Believe in Sherlock Holmes

“I believe in Sherlock Holmes” has become a staple of nerd life over the past month. Since Reichenbach, I’ve probably said it ten times more than “We believe in God, the father almighty, maker of heaven and earth”, despite being, you know, Christian. I really don’t think a fanbase has ever banded together so strongly in support of a show, and it’s so cool to walk past a bulletin board and see one of these posters or find a Sherlock-supporting message scrawled on a sidewalk in chalk.
BUT
It doesn’t mean anything! These posters, while cool, are nothing but free advertising and inside jokes. I hate to be cynical about it, but there it is. I just wish there was something that we could DO with it! There has to be some way that we could monetize this and turn it into a charity. One that helps kids get books and learn to read, since we owe the very existence of Sherlock Holmes to books, or maybe an Innocence Project-type thing, since what was Sherlock better at than making sure the right people were convicted?
But Sherlock fans are so intelligent and thoughtful, I can’t help but think we could do something amazing with this.
The solution I’ve come up with so far (and admittedly it’s a pretty uninvolved and oversimplified one) is that, if you put up a poster with the little tabs on the bottom, put something like this on the tabs:
We believe because of books.
Help a child believe, too.

Or whatever charity you like, really. Just connect it in some way, and take a moment to look up the charity’s credibility rating if you aren’t particularly familiar with it. Here are some others that might work:
We believe in Sherlock, but we believe
in you, too. If you need someone:
1-800-273-TALK
Suicide Prevention Lifeline
Sherlock is just one of the millions
of falsely accused people in the world.
